INTRODUCTION

A short time ago Ron Pokrasso, fellow printmaker and mentor of mine, visited my studio with Hugo Anaya owner of Piramidal Grafica Studio in Guanajuato Mexico. During the visit Hugo invited me to offer a workshop at his large printshop in Guanajuato. I couldn’t resist the opportunity, and I have put together an amazing offering: COLLAGRAPH AS MATRIX

Treat yourself to an exciting art adventure while enjoying the wonders of Guanajuato. Experience this colorful and inspiring former silver mining town famous for its hilly, cobbled alleys lined with colonial architecture and picturesque garden plazas. Absorb the cities richness and layered color and bring it into the studio. It’s a compact, walkable city but the large student population means there’s plenty going on with many cafes, bars, street food stalls, markets, museums and art galleries. One of Mexico’s best-kept secrets, a fascinating destination for an art making getaway.

COLLAGRAPH AS MATRIX

This workshop will focus on the collagraph as a platform for monoprint. We will construct one or more collagraph (fixed matrix plate) upon which we will explore various color systems, viscosities and collage materials. Various techniques will be introduced and demonstrated such as silk aquatint, direct application of gel medium for brush work, carborundum aquatint and the use of incised line with a Dremel and or etching tools. From one plate (or more) the possibilities can be infinite! This fixed plate may also be incorporated with multi plate printing.

THE WORKSHOP

The program begins with a colorful welcome dinner and orientation at Alma del Sol on Tuesday, May 4. The workshop takes place at Piramidal Grafica Studio which houses three large presses and ample workspace for up to 12 participants, this professional facility is well suited to serve all the creative needs of workshop attendees. Seven days have been allotted for the program including a day-off on Saturday, May 8 when participants can take the time to explore this colorful colonial gem. The program caps off with an informal critique and a closing dinner/celebration on Tuesday, May 11, the final day of the program.

Instructional hours are, 10am-5pm each day (except Saturday, May 8.) Most printmaking materials such as inks and modifiers, monotype plates, tools, Gel mediums, collagraph materials, adhesives, paper towels, rags, solvents, etc. are included. A limited supply of BFK 22 x 30” will be available for purchase at $9.00 per sheet. Participants are encouraged to bring some of their own paper, favorite tools and collage materials.

Our host Hugo Anaya provides wonderfully prepared lunches each of the instructional days. Hugo will also be available part time as assistant for the workshop and will provide all the necessary information to help make this a memorable visit to Guanajuato and a rewarding artistic adventure.
