RELIEF PRINTMAKING

Relief printmaking is a printmaking process for beginners and experienced artists alike. In relief, a surface is drawn on and carved out using carving gouges/tools. The surface is then inked up using a brayer and then printed by hand, or with a press. It is accessible in the home without a press and can be used in a variety of ways on paper or fabric. The workshop will cover block preparation, transferring an image onto the block, carving techniques, paper options, carving and inking techniques, and the printing process. Participants will learn to register and print a unique two-layer relief print!

CHINE COLLÉ & MONOTYPE

Do you have flat files and portfolios full of old drawings, prints, and scraps of fine papers too good to throw away but not worthy of a frame? Then this workshop is for you. Incorporate those old goodies into something new with this collage process. Chine collé is a collage process that is glued simultaneously while a print is being transferred. Chine collé may be used in partnership with all print media or as a medium unto itself utilizing the pressure of the press to create a unified surface.

COLLAGRAPH

Collagraph presents amazing possibilities and variations with the capability of printing small editions. Everyone will be able to explore the many rich and textural facets of the collagraph, creating plates by using an acrylic polymer to adhere a vast variety of objects, cardboard shapes, and carborundum grits. The collagraph plate may be printed in either intaglio or relief. Colors may be blended on one plate or several plates can be printed for multi-color prints. Experiment with color and embossed texture while allowing expression with drawing and line in a unique printmaking process.

PHOTOPOLYMER ETCHING

I will demonstrate this simple and exciting process in an intensive three-day workshop. Photo polymer is a safe alternative to traditional etching and relief printing. Photopolymer etching plates are a prepared light sensitive polymer surface on a steel backing. Water and ultraviolet light affect the unexposed polymer and any areas of the plate blocked out from the light remain water-soluble. The remaining areas become hardened. Washing out the blocked areas with tap water creates etching. No acid, asphalt grounds, or petroleum solvents are used in any way for the preparation of the plate. The etched plate may be used for traditional intaglio or relief printing.

WEEKEND WARRIOR WORKSHOP

Coming to town and wish to dive into some creative work? Planning a trip to Santa Fe with a few friends looking for a unique experience? Let’s plan something together and put it on the calendar. We could focus on any of the other workshop ideas or a combination of a few different mediums. In the past I have taken groups to studios and galleries, art tours, and I have done photo field trips to locations such as Santa Barbara Canyon, Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project, and Puye Cliff Dwellings. Living in northern New Mexico for nearly thirty years, I have a lot of experiences to draw from. Create your own unique adventure.
